Egypt's Minister of Local Development and Environment, Dr. Manal Awad, has highlighted the importance of expanding bioenergy projects to achieve economic returns and promote sustainable waste management. This came during a meeting chaired by Yasser Abdullah, head of the Waste Management Regulatory Authority, to review the progress of the Bioenergy for Sustainable Development Foundation. The meeting aimed to discuss the foundation's plans and programs for the upcoming period.
The meeting reviewed the foundation's achievements over the past few months, including monitoring visits to biogas production units. A total of 67 units were inspected in the governorates of Minya and Asyut, bringing the total number of units monitored and followed up since the beginning of the year to 193. Additionally, several awareness campaigns were implemented in various governorates to introduce the importance of bioenergy projects and their benefits.
Dr. Manal Awad emphasized that bioenergy projects are a practical and sustainable solution to maximize the utilization of waste, achieving integrated environmental, economic, and social benefits. These projects help reduce the environmental impacts of unsafe waste disposal, produce energy and organic fertilizer, and support agricultural activities. This, in turn, contributes to reducing energy costs, creating job opportunities, and improving living standards in local communities.
Yasser Abdullah stated that biogas projects represent an important model for applying the circular economy concept by converting waste into valuable resources. He stressed that expanding these projects reduces reliance on traditional energy sources and supports the state's efforts to address climate change and achieve sustainable development goals.
The meeting also discussed the importance of continuing on-site monitoring of biogas units and expanding awareness programs to introduce the advantages of this technology. This aims to enhance the use of available resources and support the state's orientation towards a circular economy and sustainable development.
The foundation's future plans were also discussed, including strengthening cooperation and coordination to support bioenergy projects and expanding their applications. The goal is to increase the number of biogas production units, develop monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and broaden partnerships with relevant parties, the private sector, and local communities.
The upcoming period is expected to witness intensified efforts to promote the use of bioenergy, provide technical and awareness support to beneficiaries, and ensure project sustainability and maximum benefit. This is in line with the directives of Dr. Manal Awad and the state's efforts towards a more sustainable future in resource and waste management.
