Egyptian Governor Mohamed Elwan recently conducted an inspection tour of the West Assiut power plant, one of the country's largest power generation facilities. The plant was implemented during the presidency of Abdel Fattah El-Sisi as part of the state's efforts to enhance electricity production and support development projects in Upper Egypt. Elwan was accompanied by several high-ranking officials, including the head of the Qena-based electricity production company.
During the tour, Elwan reviewed the plant's operational capabilities and environmental and developmental projects, including the "Zero Water Loss" project and the initiative to plant 100 acres of jojoba trees. These projects were cited as models for environmental sustainability and optimal use of water resources. The governor listened to a detailed explanation from the company's CEO, supported by a illustrative model of the plant, about its components and production capacity.
The West Assiut power plant spans 85 acres and has a total generating capacity of 1,500 megawatts, contributing to the national electricity grid and securing power supply. The plant consists of two modules, each with a capacity of 750 megawatts, and relies on combined cycle technology. This technology allows for the use of thermal energy generated by gas units to produce additional power through steam units, increasing efficiency and electricity production without consuming extra fuel.
The plant employs around 300 engineers, technicians, administrators, and workers. The head of the plant's sector, Jamal Othman, welcomed Elwan and emphasized the importance of cooperation between executive institutions and the electricity sector to support projects that combine operational efficiency and environmental conservation. Othman highlighted the "Zero Water Loss" project as a practical experience in utilizing treated water and reducing loss.
The environmental management director at the company, Yasmin Salah, presented details of the "Zero Water Loss" project, which won first prize in the medium project category within the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects in Assiut. The project provides innovative solutions to reduce water waste and utilize technology in addressing environmental challenges. The project was honored during an official ceremony in October.
Elwan and his companions then inspected the main control room at the plant and listened to an explanation of the mechanisms for monitoring and operating generation units, turbines, and transformers. They also reviewed the importance of the control room in monitoring loads and managing the generation system. Additionally, Elwan inspected the jojoba cultivation project on 100 acres, aiming to achieve safe utilization of water resulting from the plant's operations.
The governor's tour aimed to emphasize the state's commitment to supporting development projects and promoting environmental sustainability in Assiut. The projects inspected during the tour reflect the efforts of the Egyptian government to enhance electricity production, conserve natural resources, and mitigate the environmental impact of industrial activities.
