Egyptian Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Dr. Ahmed Rustom, recently presented a comprehensive plan to support startups during the "Egypt 2026 Forum". The plan aims to foster entrepreneurship and encourage innovation in the country. Dr. Rustom emphasized the importance of equipping university graduates with the skills required for the current job market. He highlighted that the ability to identify real problems, devise innovative solutions, and convince the market of their value-added is crucial for entrepreneurs.

Dr. Rustom stressed that technology, programming, and artificial intelligence represent significant opportunities for young people in the current economy. He encouraged them to acquire these skills to develop technologies that address challenges in vital sectors such as logistics, industry, and agriculture. The Minister also pointed out the efforts of the Egypt Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in refining these capabilities. This center plays a vital role in supporting startups and fostering a culture of innovation.

The Minister's plan includes the establishment of a joint financing fund through "NI Capital" to provide funding for companies at various stages. The goal is to support 5,000 startups and attract $5 billion in venture capital. Additionally, a unified financing initiative aims to mobilize $1 billion over five years. These measures are part of a broader strategy to create a supportive ecosystem for startups, ensuring their continuity, growth, and ability to attract investments.

Dr. Rustom also addressed the issue of transitioning from "regulatory sandboxes" to obtaining permanent licenses. He assured that the government is giving this matter high priority and is working in coordination with the Central Bank of Egypt and relevant authorities to find clear regulatory pathways. This will enable companies to expand and grow their investments while maintaining market stability and protecting stakeholders.

The Minister highlighted the success of the "Business Clinic" mechanism at the Egypt Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, which has resolved 21 challenges out of 48 received. The government is working to integrate Egyptian entrepreneurs abroad, encouraging them to expand within the Egyptian market and beyond. This initiative aims to leverage the expertise and experiences of Egyptian entrepreneurs globally to boost the local economy.

Dr. Rustom emphasized that entrepreneurship is a top priority for the Egyptian government. This is reflected in the activation of the Ministerial Group for Entrepreneurship, led by the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs. The government's efforts focus on building a comprehensive system that supports startups and ensures their growth and sustainability.

According to estimates from "Startup Genome" for 2024, the value of the startup ecosystem is equivalent to about 8% of the GDP of the G20 countries. Dr. Rustom affirmed that entrepreneurs are the most effective element in providing innovative solutions to geopolitical and environmental changes, as well as the rise of artificial intelligence. The government's plan to support startups is a step towards enhancing Egypt's position as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship in the region.
