The Egyptian government has extended the deadline for citizens to apply for alternative housing under the old rent law by three months, until January 12, 2027. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly at the new administrative capital. The extension allows citizens covered by Law 164 of 2025 to continue applying for alternative housing units.

According to the Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, 96,500 citizens have submitted applications, with 106,600 forms received, divided into 104,700 for residential units and 18,000 for non-residential units. The majority of applicants are from Cairo, followed by Giza. The government has been working to address the housing needs of citizens under the old rent law.

The Ministry of Housing has reported that the Social Housing Fund and Real Estate Finance Support have provided 15,000 housing units in new cities and governorates for the program. The application deadline for the current announcement is November 8. The program will be implemented after the priorities approved by the cabinet are completed.

The government has developed a plan to address the applications of citizens who are eligible for alternative housing. The plan includes determining the total number of eligible citizens, classifying them by governorate and type of use, and publishing the results after approval by the cabinet. Citizens will receive a text message informing them of the final status of their application.

The government has also announced that 5% of the available housing units will be allocated for people with disabilities. The allocation of units will be based on the classification of the area where the original unit is located, taking into account the level of the neighborhood. The law aims to regulate the relationship between landlords and tenants.

The extension of the deadline is expected to give more citizens the opportunity to apply for alternative housing. The government has been working to address the housing crisis in Egypt, particularly in major cities like Cairo and Giza. The new law aims to provide a more efficient and fair system for allocating housing units.

The cabinet's decision to extend the deadline has been welcomed by citizens who were struggling to meet the original deadline. The government has assured citizens that it is working to provide more housing units and to improve the overall housing situation in Egypt. The deadline extension is seen as a positive step towards addressing the housing needs of citizens.
