The Egyptian Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has launched a crackdown on bakeries in Cairo and Giza that are selling bread at lower weights and higher prices than the set rates. According to a report by MBC Egypt, some bakeries were found to be selling bread at 50 piasters more per loaf than the official price. The ministry has set the weight and price of tourist bread at three categories: 80 grams for two pounds, 60 grams for one and a half pounds, and 40 grams for one pound.
The move comes after a recent incident where some bakeries were found to be selling bread at lower weights, putting an extra financial burden on citizens. Dr. Ahmed Abu Al-Gheit, Assistant Minister of Supply for Regulatory Affairs, said that the ministry is continuously monitoring the situation and will intensify its campaigns to control the market and protect consumer rights. He added that the ministry appreciates the efforts of media outlets in reporting such irregularities, which enables them to take prompt action.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian Meteorological Authority has forecast that the country will experience continued autumnal weather in the coming days, with chances of rain in several provinces and a noticeable drop in temperatures at night and in the early morning. Dr. Manar Ghoneim, a meteorologist at the authority, said that the country is still under the influence of a low-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, but its impact will be less severe than in the past few days.
The Meteorological Authority has warned of the possibility of fog on roads and increased wind activity. Dr. Ghoneim added that the chances of rain are still present, although at lower levels than in recent days. The authority has advised citizens to take necessary precautions when traveling.
In a separate development, Dr. Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din, advisor to the President for Health and Prevention, has stated that the mutation of viruses and changes in their characteristics is a natural and usual phenomenon. He emphasized that no highly dangerous viruses or strong mutations have been detected so far that would warrant concern.
Dr. Tag El-Din added that Egypt has the capacity to deal with viruses, whether known or emerging, and has provided vaccines for those who need them. He also pointed out that some countries have witnessed the emergence of new viruses, but the situation in Egypt is under control.
The advisor to the President for Health and Prevention also stated that the state is prepared to deal with any viral developments and has provided vaccines for those who need them. He emphasized that there are no exceptional health problems related to the current weather changes.
