The Egyptian government has announced a series of decisions that will affect millions of citizens. These decisions were made during a meeting of the Council of Ministers, chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. The decisions aim to implement recommendations from the "Egypt 2026" forum and include measures to reduce electricity consumption costs for certain users and extend deadlines for rental applications.
One of the key decisions is to offer a 30% discount on electricity consumption for users with code meters installed before 2024 who have not yet settled building violations. This discount will be applied for six months, and the state will bear the cost, estimated at around 3 billion pounds. This move is intended to give users time to rectify their situations.
The government has also decided to extend the deadline for submitting applications for alternative housing units for those covered by Law No. 164 of 2025. The new deadline is January 12, 2027, three months after the initial deadline of October 12, 2026. According to the Housing Ministry, around 96,500 citizens have submitted applications for alternative units, with a total of 106,600 forms.
In the area of wages, the government has announced plans to improve the salaries of pre-university education teachers. The increase will range from 5,000 to 6,000 pounds, depending on the job grade, over the next two financial years. This move is in line with a presidential directive to improve teacher salaries, in cooperation with the Ministries of Education and Finance.
The Council of Ministers has also approved the granting of a "golden license" to two wind power projects in the Gulf of Suez and Ras Shukair, Red Sea Governorate. Each project will have a capacity of 900 megawatts, for a total of 1,800 megawatts. The electricity produced will be sold to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.
Additionally, the government has approved a decision to establish the Higher Council for Human Resource Development, chaired by the Minister of Labor. The council will be responsible for setting general policies for training and qualification, linking education and training to current labor market needs and future jobs.
The Council of Ministers has also approved the creation of a fund to finance training and qualification, aimed at financing vocational and technical training programs, developing training centers, and enhancing the connection between education outputs and labor market needs.
