In a recent interview with the Egyptian TV program "Al Alam Ghadan," prominent Egyptian diplomat and former Assistant Foreign Minister Rauf Saad expressed his views on the possibility of an agreement between the United States and Iran. According to Saad, reaching such an agreement is not impossible. He noted that the exchanged statements regarding escalation and de-escalation represent important mechanisms within negotiation strategies.
Saad highlighted that Iran has sent positive messages regarding its return to negotiations. However, he emphasized that the chances of a diplomatic solution depend on the ability of both parties to overcome military and political pressures. The diplomat also mentioned that the United States had previously tested a large-scale military escalation against Iran without achieving all its objectives.
The Egyptian diplomat warned that continued confrontation would not lead to a real victory for either side, stressing that the repercussions of war would affect everyone at a time when pressures on the global economy and energy markets are increasing. He pointed out that Israel is seeking to obstruct peace efforts in Iran and Gaza, noting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has thwarted all peace agendas in the region.
Saad emphasized the importance of Egypt's role in managing regional crises, noting that Cairo is acting with utmost wisdom and restraint while maintaining relations with various parties. This, he believes, enhances Egypt's ability to mediate without bias, with a clear condemnation of attacks on Gulf states. He also stressed that Egypt has a fundamental role and the capacity to resolve regional crises.
The diplomat highlighted the significance of Egypt's credibility in mediation efforts, aiming to manage regional crises while continuing to build the state and its institutions and investing in human capital. Regarding regional repercussions, Saad warned of a worsening global energy crisis linked to war as winter approaches. He also noted that the Houthis do not have the capability to completely close the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
Saad pointed out that the Suez Canal is capable of overcoming attempts at competition and the emergence of alternative sea and land routes. He emphasized the importance of the canal's location in global trade. The diplomat also praised the strategic cooperation between Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus, describing it as a "golden alloy" due to its economic, political, and security importance, especially in the field of natural gas and energy.
Saad predicted an increase in the volume of cooperation and Egyptian-European relations in the coming phase, given Europe's review of its alliances after the Ukraine war and its negative impacts on energy and the economy.
