The Cairo Misdemeanors Court of Appeal is scheduled to hear the appeal of three defendants, Fahd.H, 36, Youssef.I, 21, and Amin.I, 23, who were convicted of drug trafficking and possession of firearms without a license. The defendants were initially sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined 100,000 Egyptian pounds each.
According to the prosecution, the defendants were found to be in possession of various narcotics, including heroin, 6-monoacetylmorphine, and a derivative of indazole carboxamide. The prosecution alleged that the defendants intended to trade these substances without a license. Additionally, they were accused of possessing and carrying firearms, including a shotgun and five bullets, without proper authorization.
The investigation, led by the first Salam police department, began with a tip about the suspected drug trafficking activities of Fahd.H and Youssef.I. Police conducted a controlled purchase of narcotics from the defendants, leading to their arrest and the seizure of the substances. A search of Fahd.H's person yielded a loaded shotgun, heroin cylinders, cash, and a mobile phone.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Amin.I, who was found to be in possession of mobile phones, cash, a loaded firearm, and transparent bags containing narcotics and heroin cylinders. The defendants reportedly admitted to possessing the substances for trade and identified Amin.I as their supplier.
Laboratory tests confirmed that the seized substances included 10 bags of a yellow substance weighing 885 grams, which tested positive for a derivative of indazole carboxamide. Additionally, three beige-colored pieces weighing 659 grams tested positive for 6-monoacetylmorphine, and six transparent bags containing 4 kilograms of a plant-based substance tested positive for another derivative of indazole carboxamide.
The court will review the appeal and consider the evidence presented against the defendants. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the defendants will be required to serve their original 15-year prison sentences and pay the fines imposed upon them.
The case highlights the ongoing efforts of Egyptian law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and organized crime in the country. The defendants' conviction and upcoming appeal serve as a reminder of the serious consequences for those involved in such activities.
