The Cairo misdemeanor court started hearing the appeal of the three employees of EgyptAir, the national airline of Egypt, and another person on a five-year prison sentence and a fine of 100,000 Egyptian pounds each. They were accused of taking bribes to facilitate smuggling large sums of cash into the country in violation of the law. The case involves four defendants.

According to the charges, the first defendant, 44-year-old Ibrahim, exploited his position as a store organizer at EgyptAir to request and receive a bribe to compromise his duties. He allegedly asked for and received 85,000 Egyptian pounds from the fourth defendant to facilitate smuggling cash into the country. The second and third defendants, also EgyptAir employees, accepted bribes of 2,000 and 5,000 Egyptian pounds, respectively.

Investigations revealed that the defendants, based on statements from a customs officer at Cairo International Airport, were involved in smuggling large sums of cash. During a search of the vehicle driven by the third defendant, authorities found over 4 million Egyptian pounds hidden under the seats and wrapped in paper near the engine. The third defendant admitted to knowing about the hidden cash and planning to transport it within the airport to deliver it to someone else.

Further investigations revealed that the defendants were involved in a larger scheme to smuggle cash. The customs officer stated that after the second and third defendants were caught, the first defendant was tracked down and found with 10,000 Egyptian pounds on his person. When confronted, he admitted to taking part in the scheme and receiving a bribe to facilitate the smuggling of cash owned by the fourth defendant.

The first defendant also admitted to transferring 2,000 Egyptian pounds to the second defendant and 5,000 Egyptian pounds to the third defendant as part of the bribe. The defendants planned to transport the cash to a neighboring country with a passenger. The case highlights the issue of corruption and bribery in Egypt's transportation sector.

The court hearing is ongoing, and a decision on the appeal has not been made. The case has garnered significant attention in Egypt due to the large sums of cash involved and the involvement of employees from the national airline. EgyptAir has not made a public statement on the matter.

The incident underscores the challenges faced by Egyptian authorities in combating corruption and ensuring the integrity of the country's transportation systems. The case will continue to be monitored as it progresses through the judicial system.
