The Central Bank of Egypt and Instapay, an Egyptian digital payments service, have issued warnings to customers about phishing scams that aim to steal sensitive banking information. These scams often involve fake calls, messages, or links from individuals claiming to be bank employees or representatives of official entities. The scammers use these tactics to obtain customers' banking data and use it for financial fraud.

To protect customers from falling victim to these scams, Instapay has provided five key tips. Firstly, customers should never share their one-time verification code (OTP) with anyone, even if the person claims to be from customer service. This code is highly sensitive and should be kept confidential to prevent unauthorized access to bank accounts.

The second tip is to keep the personal identification number (PIN) for transfers confidential. Sharing this information with anyone could give scammers access to a customer's account, allowing them to conduct unauthorized transactions. Customers are advised to memorize their PINs and not share them with anyone.

Instapay has also warned customers about the dangers of clicking on suspicious links. Scammers often send text messages or emails with links that claim to be from the bank or a legitimate source, but are actually designed to steal sensitive information. Customers are advised to be cautious when receiving unsolicited messages or links and to verify their authenticity before taking any action.

Furthermore, customers are advised not to share their bank card details, including the card verification value (CVV), with anyone. This information is confidential and should be protected to prevent financial fraud. Additionally, customers should be wary of scammers who try to create a sense of urgency, claiming that their account will be suspended or closed if they do not update their information immediately.

The Central Bank of Egypt has emphasized that banks never request customers to update their information via phone or text message. Instead, customers should only update their information through official bank channels, such as bank branches or secure online platforms. If customers receive a suspicious call or message, they should not provide any information and instead contact their bank directly through official channels.

To report suspected phishing scams or financial fraud, customers can contact the Egyptian Financial Sector's cybersecurity incident response team (EG-FinCIRT). By being vigilant and taking these precautions, customers can protect their bank accounts and sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands.
