The Egyptian Solid Waste Management Regulatory Agency launched an inspection campaign on commercial establishments in the Heliopolis district of Cairo Governorate. The campaign aimed to verify that establishments are providing suitable containers for collecting waste generated by their activities. This effort is part of the implementation of directives from Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Environment, to tighten control over the waste management system.
Dr. Manal Awad emphasized that the agency will carry out a series of inspection campaigns to ensure that commercial establishments provide waste containers with capacities that match the volume and rate of waste generation at each establishment. This aims to prevent waste from being thrown into the streets or creating random collection points, supporting the collection system from the source, and maintaining the urban appearance of cities.
The campaign is part of the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Law No. 202 of 2020 and its executive regulations, concerning the commitment of commercial establishments to the legal conditions regulating waste handling and providing suitable containers for collection. This ensures that waste is not thrown into the streets or in non-designated areas. The effort is part of the Ministry of Local Development and Environment's endeavors to upgrade the waste management system.
Yasser Abdel Allah, CEO of the Solid Waste Management Regulatory Agency, stated that the campaigns also include an awareness aspect. The agency's team educates shop owners and employees on the importance of providing designated waste containers, their role in reducing waste thrown into the streets, and maintaining environmental cleanliness and urban appearance.
Abdel Allah pointed out that providing waste containers is in accordance with Article (71) of the Solid Waste Management Law No. 202 of 2020. He stressed that continuous monitoring and field control, along with awareness of the law's provisions and regulations, will continue. Legal procedures will be taken against violators, and necessary actions will be taken.
Dr. Manal Awad directed the continuation of daily and surprise inspection tours on commercial establishments in various areas. The goal is to ensure continued commitment to providing containers and not using streets or non-designated sites as waste collection areas. Legal actions will be taken, and records will be made against any violations detected.
The agency was directed to continue coordinating with concerned authorities in governorates to tighten control over the waste management system and limit random practices. This aims to increase the efficiency of waste collection, transportation, and safe disposal operations, protecting public health, environment, and the urban appearance of streets.
