The Egyptian Ministry of Local Development and Environment's device for regulating waste management conducted an inspection campaign on commercial establishments in Cairo's Nazha district. This campaign aimed to verify that these establishments provide suitable containers for collecting waste generated by their activities. The campaign was carried out in accordance with directives from Minister of Local Development and Environment, Dr. Manal Awad, to tighten control over the waste management system.
Dr. Manal Awad emphasized that the device would carry out a series of inspection campaigns to ensure commercial establishments provide waste collection containers with capacities that match the volume and rate of waste generation at each establishment. This aims to prevent waste from being thrown into the streets or creating random collection points, supporting the collection system from the source, and maintaining the urban appearance of cities.
The campaign is part of the implementation of the Waste Management Regulation Law No. 202 of 2020 and its executive regulations, concerning the commitment of commercial establishments to the legal conditions regulating waste handling and providing suitable containers for collecting waste. This ensures that waste is not thrown into the streets or in non-designated areas. The efforts are part of the Ministry's endeavors to upgrade the waste management system and activate the legal rules and conditions regulating it.
Yasser Abdel Allah, CEO of the Waste Management Regulation Device, stated that the campaigns also include an awareness aspect. The device's team educates shop owners and employees about the importance of providing designated waste collection containers and their role in reducing waste thrown into the streets and maintaining environmental cleanliness and urban appearance.
Abdel Allah pointed out that providing waste containers is in accordance with Article (71) of the Waste Management Regulation Law No. 202 of 2020. He mentioned that continuous field monitoring and follow-up, along with awareness of the law's provisions and organized conditions, are being carried out. Legal procedures are taken against violators, and necessary actions are taken based on recorded violations.
Dr. Manal Awad directed the continuation of daily and surprise inspection campaigns on commercial establishments in various areas. These campaigns aim to ensure continued commitment to providing containers and not using streets or non-designated sites as waste collection areas. Legal actions are taken, and records are made against any violations detected.
Dr. Manal Awad also directed the Waste Management Regulation Device to continue coordinating with concerned authorities in the governorates to tighten control over the waste management system and limit random practices. This aims to increase the efficiency of waste collection, transportation, and safe disposal operations, maintaining public health, environment, and the urban appearance of streets.
