The Egyptian Ministry of Transport has announced that the second phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system will be launched on Saturday, September 26, 2026. This phase will extend from the Ain El Sokhna Road station to the Sun Capital station, covering a distance that connects several key areas in Greater Cairo. The new phase aims to provide efficient public transportation to residents and commuters.
The second phase of the BRT system will stretch from the Marshal Tantawi station to the Sun Capital station, comprising 16 stations, including two already in operation: Marshal Tantawi and Golf. These stations serve areas like New Cairo and provide direct connections to the Monorail on the East Nile, integrating with the Marshal Tantawi axis. The newly added stations include Ain El Sokhna Road, Maadi, Mokattam, Algeria, Imamain, Zahraa, Al-Bahr Al-A'zam, Omrania, Talbeya, and Meryouteya.
The Sun Capital station, situated on an 80,000 square-meter area, is a comprehensive transport hub and one of the main stations in the project. Strategically located at the intersection of the Ring Road and the Fayoum Road, it serves commuters on the Fayoum Desert Road. The station features a bus charging and maintenance facility with 21 chargers, a superjet service building, and facilities for passenger services.
The Sun Capital station is designed as an integrated transport hub, incorporating various facilities such as a microbus terminal for regional services, an internal microbus terminal for nearby residential areas, and parking for private cars. The station also includes administrative buildings, workshops, commercial areas, and service zones to cater to the needs of commuters.
The BRT project integrates with several existing and new public transportation systems in Cairo. It connects with the Cairo Metro Line 1 at Zahraa and Marg stations, Line 3 at Adly Mansour and Imbaba stations, the Light Rail Transit (LRT) at Adly Mansour station, and the Monorail on the East Nile at Marshal Tantawi station.
The project serves numerous residential, commercial, and vital areas, including New Cairo, Maadi, Mokattam, Omrania, Talbeya, Meryouteya, and the intersection of Fayoum and Wahat roads. By providing efficient and integrated public transportation, the BRT system aims to enhance mobility and reduce congestion in Greater Cairo.
