Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's recent visit to South Korea has rekindled discussions about the K9A1 EGY howitzer system, a model of strategic cooperation and joint manufacturing between the two countries. The system was showcased during the fourth edition of the International Defense Exhibition (IDEX 2025) in New Cairo. According to Hanwha, the K9A1 EGY has a range of 40 km and can fire its first round in under 60 seconds.
The K9A1 EGY howitzer system boasts several advanced features, including an automated fire control system, allowing it to fire three rounds in 15 seconds and six to eight rounds per minute. Its 1,000-horsepower diesel engine and hydropneumatic suspension enable it to operate in various environments and terrains. The system is 52% of the global modern artillery market and is used by around 1,900 units in 10 countries.
The K9A1 EGY has several distinct characteristics that set it apart from regular artillery, including a long 52-caliber barrel, a standard range of 41-54 km, and the ability to fire three shells in 15 seconds. The system is also 87% locally produced in South Korea. Egypt's acquisition of the K9A1 EGY is part of its efforts to modernize its military capabilities.
According to Brigadier General Mohamed El-Gobashi, director of the Aafaq Center for Political and Strategic Studies, the K9A1 EGY represents a significant addition to Egypt's military capabilities. He noted that the deal reflects Egypt's need to update and develop its firepower capabilities. El-Gobashi added that the initial agreement for the system dates back to 2009 but was delayed due to regional developments.
El-Gobashi emphasized that the K9A1 EGY system is not limited to the self-propelled howitzer but includes a comprehensive set of elements that ensure its efficient operation. These elements include a command and control vehicle, an ammunition vehicle, and a propulsion system. The system provides technical and operational integration, enhancing Egypt's military capabilities.
The joint manufacturing agreement is also expected to facilitate technology transfer and local production in Egypt. El-Gobashi noted that this would reduce the country's reliance on foreign suppliers and enhance its domestic defense industry. The deal aligns with Egypt's strategy to diversify its sources of armaments and promote local production.
The acquisition of the K9A1 EGY system is part of Egypt's broader efforts to modernize its military and enhance its defense capabilities. The system is expected to provide Egypt with a significant boost in terms of firepower and operational capabilities.
