Egypt and South Korea have strengthened their bilateral ties with the signing of 12 agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in advanced and strategic industries. The agreements were signed during a summit meeting between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. This development is a significant step towards deepening the relationship between the two nations.
The agreements include a joint declaration to launch negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The declaration was signed by South Korean Trade Minister Park Jong-sung and Egyptian Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Mohamed Fared Salah. This move is expected to boost trade and investment between the two countries.
The two presidents had previously agreed to pursue CEPA negotiations during their meeting in November last year, when President Lee visited Egypt. The agreements also include a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two countries' industry ministries on cooperation in shipbuilding. Another MoU was signed between the South Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Egyptian Ministry of Transport on maritime cooperation.
The South Korean Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy and the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy signed two MoUs, one on cooperation in clean energy and the other on a partnership for cooperation in electricity infrastructure. Additionally, the South Korean Ministry of Science and Technology and the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology signed an MoU on cooperation in the field of information and communications technology.
The two countries also agreed to enhance cooperation in education, with an MoU signed between the South Korean Ministry of Education and the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Furthermore, an MoU was signed between the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Egyptian Ministry of Culture on cultural exchange, with 2027 declared as the year of mutual cultural exchange.
The Egyptian Museum in Cairo also signed an MoU with the National Museum of Korea and the National Agricultural Museum of Korea on cooperation. The two countries' foreign ministries also signed a social security agreement to alleviate the burden of double insurance payments for employees seconded to either country.
The agreements reflect the two countries' commitment to strengthening their bilateral relationship and promoting cooperation in various fields. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement is expected to play a significant role in enhancing trade and investment between Egypt and South Korea.
