The National Bank of Egypt, in collaboration with Bank Misr and the American University in Cairo, has officially launched "The Oxford Handbook of the Egyptian Economy." This project is part of an ongoing partnership between the three institutions to support scientific research, enrich economic knowledge, and promote development efforts in Egypt. The American University in Cairo hosted the launch event, which was attended by prominent economists, policymakers, academics, and experts.
The project was made possible through a grant of $200,000 from the National Bank of Egypt and Bank Misr, provided to the School of International and Public Affairs at the American University in Cairo. The grant was split equally between the two banks to support this specialized research project on economic development and policies in Egypt, which began in 2022. Dr. Ihab Abdel Rahman, Deputy for Academic Affairs at the American University in Cairo, praised the project and its academic importance.
Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, Professor of Economics at Cairo University and President of the Egyptian Economic Association, reviewed the journey of preparing "The Oxford Handbook of the Egyptian Economy." He explained that the idea for the project emerged from his participation in the American Economic Association and the Middle East Economic Association. Mohieldin noted that the project involved the contributions of nearly 140 researchers and reviewers over several years.
The guide covers a wide range of issues, including Egypt's political economy, demographics, geography, governance, human and social development, economic growth, labor market, sectoral and industrial development, and poverty. It also examines Egypt's relationship with the global economy and future trends and challenges. Dr. Mohieldin emphasized that the project provides a comprehensive analysis of Egypt's economic development over the past few decades.
Dina Abu Talib, Head of Marketing and Community Development at the National Bank of Egypt, stated that the project aligns with the bank's role in community development and its commitment to supporting education and scientific research. The bank's efforts are part of a cooperation protocol signed in 2022 with Bank Misr and the American University in Cairo to support education and research.
The launch event also included a review of the handbook's contents by its three editors, Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, Dr. Marcelo Giugale, and Dr. Rasha Ramadan. They discussed the guide's various sections and themes, highlighting the key issues and transformations it addresses in understanding Egypt's economy and its development paths.
