Egyptian sleeper trains have seen a significant increase in occupancy rates, reaching 95-100% during peak seasons and 70-80% during the summer. The company, led by Fadi Alphonso, has implemented a comprehensive plan to upgrade the service, including renovating cars, improving cleanliness and meals, and training staff. This upgrade aims to provide a travel experience that rivals European standards.
The company, which has been operating in Egypt for over 20 years, returned to managing sleeper trains in 2023 after a previous stint from 2000 to 2009. With the support of the Ministry of Transport and the Egyptian Railway Authority, the company is committed to offering a high-quality service to Egyptian and foreign passengers. The introduction of the elite class, dubbed "Elite," is part of this effort, providing passengers with a luxurious travel experience.
The elite class offers upgraded amenities, including modernized cars, new lighting, and improved meals. The company has also introduced microwave ovens to heat meals and provide hot, fresh food to passengers. Additionally, the company has focused on developing its human resources, providing training programs for staff in collaboration with the Egyptian Tourism Chamber and specialized companies.
The company currently operates 101 cars, a mix of Spanish and German-made vehicles, with plans to introduce new trains to meet growing demand. The Spanish cars have been upgraded in collaboration with the Spanish company Coloay, while the German cars have undergone multiple improvements. The company also manages buffet cars and ticket sales points at various train stations.
The occupancy rates are split between Egyptian citizens (75-80%) and foreign tourists and groups (20-25%). To encourage the use of sleeper trains, the company has launched promotions, including a 50% discount on certain tickets for groups of 15 or more passengers. This has led to increased adoption by tourism companies.
According to Alphonso, the upgraded trains compare favorably to those in European countries, offering more spacious cabins, better design, and improved services. The company aims to continue providing high-quality services while managing rising operational costs. To achieve this, they have implemented efficient supply chain management and partnered with major suppliers to reduce costs.
The company offers various booking options, including an online platform, a mobile app, and a call center. Passengers can book tickets up to three months in advance, and the company has introduced an electronic ticket system. With the support of the Egyptian Railway Authority, the company plans to introduce new trains to meet growing demand and further enhance the travel experience.
