Egypt's development efforts in Sinai are being bolstered by a significant infrastructure project. The planned 500km railway line connecting Al-Ferdan, East Port Said, Bir Al-Abd, Al-Arish, and Taba is a key component of the region's comprehensive and sustainable development strategy. According to Dr. Abdullah Abu Khadra, a professor of transportation engineering, this project is crucial for linking Sinai to the national railway network, thereby stimulating economic activity and facilitating the movement of passengers and goods.

The railway project is a vital part of the integrated development corridor from Al-Arish to Taba. It aims to revitalize Sinai's connection to the rest of Egypt, enhancing the transportation of people and goods. The project involves upgrading and doubling the Al-Ferdan bridge and constructing a new, duplicate bridge over the Suez Canal. This will ensure efficient and safe train passage, supporting the movement of goods and people between Sinai and the Nile Valley.

The first phase of the project, covering 100km from Al-Ferdan to Bir Al-Abd, was completed and opened in October 2024. This phase included the renovation of several main stations, such as Al-Qantara East, Ghalbana, Balouza, Rumana, Najila, and Bir Al-Abd. Work on the second phase, spanning 83km to Al-Arish, is ongoing. This phase involves laying railway tracks and building seven new stations to serve local communities and enhance access to modern transportation services.

The project also includes a direct railway link to Al-Arish port, stretching 12km, to facilitate goods transportation. An additional link to a cement factory is planned, along with the construction of tunnels and bridges. These developments are expected to boost shipping, export capabilities, and overall transportation efficiency in the region.

Dr. Abu Khadra emphasized that the Sinai development train is not just a transportation project but a catalyst for broader development. It aims to support new urban areas, attract investments, create job opportunities for Sinai's residents, and maximize the region's economic potential. This aligns with Egypt's goals for sustainable development and the localization of productive and service activities.

The project's impact on the local economy and community is significant. By improving transportation infrastructure, it will enhance access to services, stimulate economic growth, and provide better connectivity between Sinai and the rest of Egypt. This, in turn, is expected to improve living standards and offer new opportunities for the region's inhabitants.

As the project progresses, it is expected to play a pivotal role in Egypt's development strategy for Sinai. With its completion, the region will benefit from enhanced economic prospects, improved infrastructure, and stronger integration with the national economy. The project stands as a testament to Egypt's commitment to comprehensive development and regional growth.
