Egypt's railway network is undergoing significant expansion, with several new projects aimed at increasing cargo transport capacity. According to Engineer Mohamed Amer, head of the Egyptian Railway Authority, the recently reopened Ferdan-Bir al-Abd line has successfully increased cargo transport by train. The line, which connects to the East Port Said port, has seen a substantial rise in cargo transport, with the number of weekly train trips increasing from one to daily operations.
The East Port Said port serves several international shipping lines and plays a crucial role in Egypt's logistics sector. In addition to the Ferdan-Bir al-Abd line, the Egyptian Railway Authority is working on several other projects to enhance the country's railway network. One such project is the Ain Sokhna axis, which is expected to be completed soon. The project includes the construction of a new port and the introduction of diesel-powered trains. The Ain Sokhna area will also feature tracks for high-speed electric trains.
The Arish-Taba axis is another significant project, which will connect the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. This axis is crucial, given the large industrial base in Sinai, including cement and marble industries. By linking these industries to the railway network, the transportation of products and goods will become more efficient, enabling easier export and import operations.
The Egyptian Railway Authority is also focusing on developing the Tanta-Mansoura-Damietta axis. This involves duplicating the Mansoura-Damietta line, which is approximately 69 kilometers long, and updating signaling systems on the Tanta-Mansoura line. This axis passes through the Tanta logistics area and the Mahalla al-Kubra industrial zone.
Plans are underway to connect the Gerjoub port to the railway network, extending as far as the Salum port. The Gerjoub port is nearing completion, and once connected to the railway line in Smeal, it will provide a vital link to the Alexandria port. This expansion will significantly enhance Egypt's logistics capabilities.
The ongoing projects aim to strengthen Egypt's position as a major logistics hub in the region.
