Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr. Mahmoud Essmat, revealed that the nuclear fuel for the Dabaa nuclear power plant is set to arrive in Egypt in May 2027. This development marks a significant milestone in the country's nuclear energy program. The minister emphasized that the fuel's arrival will be carried out under strict safety measures. The Dabaa plant, with a capacity of 4800 megawatts, is expected to produce 37,843 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually.
The Dabaa nuclear power plant is anticipated to commence commercial operation between 2029 and 2030. Once fully operational, the plant is projected to save 7.902 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. This substantial reduction in natural gas consumption is expected to have a positive impact on Egypt's energy landscape. The project is also seen as a vital contributor to the country's economic growth, with an estimated 30,000 job opportunities created during its construction and operation phases.
Dr. Essmat highlighted the eco-friendly nature of the project, citing its potential to provide a clean source of energy while minimizing environmental impact. The minister also emphasized the long-term cost-effectiveness of nuclear energy, positioning it as a competitive option in Egypt's energy mix. A notable innovation in the project involves a joint Egyptian-Russian proposal to utilize advanced seawater desalination technologies for cooling the reactor.
The integration of nuclear and renewable energy sources into Egypt's energy mix is expected to yield substantial economic benefits. According to the minister, the operationalization of these energy sources between 2026 and 2030 will result in significant natural gas savings. These savings are estimated to be around $13.786 billion, based on a natural gas price of $8 per million British thermal units.
The Egyptian government's efforts to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on natural gas are ongoing. The Dabaa nuclear power plant is a key component of this strategy, aiming to enhance energy security and promote sustainable development. The project has garnered significant attention from various stakeholders, including international partners and local communities.
The National Press Authority organized a seminar, chaired by Engineer Abdel Sadek El-Shorbagy, to discuss Egypt's electricity sector achievements and future plans. During the seminar, Dr. Essmat provided an update on the Dabaa nuclear power plant's progress and its expected contributions to Egypt's energy sector. The event highlighted the importance of effective communication and collaboration among stakeholders in the energy industry.
The Egyptian government remains committed to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Dabaa nuclear power plant. With the nuclear fuel delivery scheduled for May 2027, the country is poised to take a significant step towards expanding its nuclear energy capabilities. As the project progresses, Egypt is expected to reap the benefits of a diversified energy mix, enhanced energy security, and reduced environmental impact.
