The National Communications Institute (NTI) in Egypt recently hosted a listening session on the communications and information technology sector. The session was attended by a number of professors from the institute, executive leaders from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and the National Regulatory Authority for Telecommunications. Also in attendance were deans of specialized colleges, deputy presidents of public, private, and international universities, experts, and specialists in the sector.
The listening session was held in response to a call from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to hear the opinions of academics, experts, and specialists on various national issues and files. The session is also a precursor to the launch of Egypt 2026 forum, scheduled to take place from October 19-24, 2026. The NTI aims to contribute its scientific, training, and research expertise to the dialogue on the future of the communications and information technology sector.
The session discussed a number of issues related to the rapid evolution of technology, requirements for digital infrastructure, skills gaps, and ways to enhance integration between state institutions, the private sector, and educational and research institutions. Dr. Ahmed Khattab, director of the NTI, stated that the listening session was a response to the President's call for national dialogue on various issues and files.
The session witnessed extensive discussions on the gaps and challenges facing digital infrastructure, the data center industry, and cloud computing. Participants emphasized the importance of having a national cloud system to host the data of the business community, which would help save time and effort, rationalize expenditures, and support the stability of vision when setting future plans for institutions and companies.
The attendees also discussed the challenges facing the establishment of data centers, particularly in vital sectors such as banks and housing, and ways to overcome them. These challenges include protecting information from hacking and illegal trafficking, finding alternative solutions to provide the necessary energy for this industry, and exploring ways to attract investments to the data center industry.
The listening session resulted in a number of recommendations and proposals that can be built upon in the next stage. These include developing a comprehensive national strategy for building digital capacities, creating a unified national platform that collects specialized training programs, and allowing universities to benefit from them according to their needs.
The participants emphasized that addressing the gaps and challenges facing the communications and information technology sector requires an integrated vision that combines the development of infrastructure, updating regulatory and legislative frameworks, enhancing cybersecurity, developing education and training, and linking scientific research to industry needs.
