Egyptian Minister of Electricity, Dr. Mahmoud Essmat, has addressed the recent surge in prepaid meter charges, citing the transition between consumption brackets and service fees as key factors. In an interview with journalist Lamis Al-Hadidi on the "Al-Nahar" TV channel, Essmat explained that the country's electricity consumption system is divided into seven brackets for household use, with varying levels of government support.
The seven consumption brackets have support levels ranging from 24% to 88%, with the first bracket receiving the highest level of support. As consumption increases, the support level decreases, with the highest consumption bracket receiving almost no support. Essmat emphasized that the cost of consumption borne by citizens depends on the bracket they fall into. This system aims to distribute support fairly, based on consumption levels.
To alleviate the financial burden of electricity consumption, citizens can adopt several daily practices to reduce their usage. One effective method is to adjust the temperature settings of refrigerators and freezers. Setting the refrigerator to 4°C or lower and the freezer to -18°C helps preserve food while minimizing energy consumption.
Another approach to reducing electricity consumption is to monitor the usage of electrical appliances. Smart power outlets and home electricity consumption monitoring devices can identify the most energy-intensive appliances and help track consumption patterns. This information enables households to develop strategies to reduce their energy usage and lower their monthly bills.
Using household appliances efficiently can also contribute to reduced electricity consumption. For example, running washing machines with full loads avoids the need for multiple cycles, saving both water and electricity. Additionally, using cold water cycles whenever possible can decrease the energy required for water heating.
Maximizing natural light and ventilation can also help reduce reliance on electric lighting and cooling systems. During the day, opening curtains and using natural light can minimize the need for artificial lighting. Similarly, opening windows during mild weather can improve air circulation and decrease the need for air conditioning, ultimately lowering electricity consumption.
Finally, replacing traditional incandescent bulbs with LED lighting can significantly reduce electricity consumption for lighting purposes. LED bulbs use less energy, produce less heat, and have a longer lifespan compared to traditional bulbs. By implementing these simple measures, households can contribute to a reduction in overall electricity consumption and lower their bills.
