The Egyptian Ministry of Education is prioritizing the development of basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. This initiative aims to address learning gaps and ensure students acquire essential skills for future success. The ministry has collaborated with UNICEF and the Sawiris Foundation to launch national programs for language and math skills development. These programs have shown promising results, with significant improvements in students' reading and writing abilities.
The National Program for Developing Arabic Language Skills has been implemented in phases, with the latest stage launched in conjunction with the first phase of the National Program for Developing Math Skills. The programs focus on identifying learning gaps and providing targeted interventions to support students who need extra help. According to the Ministry, over 30,000 teachers have been trained to support these initiatives, and around 7,500 field visits have been conducted to monitor progress.
Results from the National Program for Developing Reading and Writing Skills show that the number of students requiring support has decreased significantly. In the first phase, which covered 10 governorates, the number of students needing help dropped from 199,200 to 53,800. Similar improvements were seen in the second and third phases, with the number of students requiring support decreasing from 137,800 to 35,800 and 72,600 to 13,800, respectively.
The Ministry has also conducted nationwide assessments, which have shown a decline in the percentage of students struggling with reading and writing skills. In the first phase, 45.5% of students demonstrated weaknesses in these areas, but this figure decreased to 32.4% in the second phase and 13.9% in the third phase. These results indicate that targeted interventions can effectively address learning gaps and improve students' basic skills.
Building on the success of the reading and writing program, the Ministry has launched a new initiative to develop math skills. The first phase of this program covers 10 governorates and focuses on enhancing students' ability to understand and work with numbers, as well as develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills. The Ministry views math skills as essential for students' future success, particularly in fields related to technology and programming.
