On October 11, 2026, Egyptian Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad, New Valley Governor Hanen Majdi, and Head of the Saudi Egyptian Holding Company for Development of Egypt (SEDCO) Amr Abdel Moneim, inaugurated a factory producing date palm sacks in the industrial zone of the city of Kharga. The factory was implemented in cooperation with the New Valley governorate and the SEDCO.

The factory aims to localize the production of date palm services and enhance the value-added and local manufacturing, supporting supply chains, meeting the needs of producers, and opening up opportunities for productive and marketing growth. The factory has a production capacity of around 4,000-5,000 sacks per day, with an annual production of approximately 1.5 million sacks.

After the inauguration, Minister Awad and Governor Majdi toured some of the factory's units and spoke with workers to learn about their needs. The minister emphasized that the factory targets the localization of palm service requirements, enhancing added value, and local manufacturing, supporting supply chains, and providing producers' needs.

Governor Majdi explained the project's executive and operational status, noting that the building and its equipment have been completed, production lines and equipment have been supplied, and actual operation and production have begun. This marks the project's transition to the operation and production stage, achieving a direct economic return, and contributing to the regularity of local production.

The date palm sacks are specialized bags designed to cover and protect date palm fronds during the ripening period, shielding them from weather factors, birds, insects, and diseases. This ensures high-quality ripening of fruits without exposure to damage before harvesting. The production of these sacks is one of the traditional and essential crafts in areas famous for palm cultivation in Egypt.

The Head of SEDCO, Amr Abdel Moneim, stated that the factory represents one of the production projects supporting the date palm system in the New Valley governorate, providing local palm service requirements, enhancing local manufacturing, and achieving benefits from available production capabilities. The factory's operation and production will provide around 60 direct job opportunities for the governorate's residents.

The factory was established on an area of 1,000 square meters and includes about 40 machines and production units specialized in manufacturing date palm sacks, allowing for regular operation according to local market needs and the date palm production sector.
