Egypt's Justice Minister, Mahmoud Helmy El-Sharif, is leading the country's delegation to the 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, held in Abu Dhabi under the theme "Protecting People and the Planet in the Digital Age." The congress is organized by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. Minister El-Sharif reviewed Egypt's national vision and experience in crime prevention, development of the criminal justice system, and consolidation of the rule of law.
In his opening speech, Minister El-Sharif highlighted Egypt's legislative and judicial developments, including the new Criminal Procedure Law, the digitalization of justice, and the expansion of remote litigation. He also emphasized efforts to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, update the penal philosophy in correctional and rehabilitation centers, and establish a national strategy to prevent and combat cybercrime.
Minister El-Sharif announced Egypt's commitment to launching strategies to combat organized crime and cybercrime, establishing a legislative framework to combat organized fraud, and setting up the Egyptian-African Center for Training on Crime Prevention and Combating Cybercrime. He also revealed plans to expand digital forensic laboratories and complete the ratification of the UN Convention on Combating Cybercrime.
On the sidelines of the conference, Minister El-Sharif held a meeting with Monica Guma, Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and head of the UN Office in Vienna. He expressed Egypt's appreciation for her leadership and affirmed continued coordination in judicial training and the establishment of specialized regional centers.
Minister El-Sharif also participated in a high-level side event with ministers of justice from France and Belgium, and representatives of participating delegations. They discussed mechanisms to enhance international judicial cooperation, exchange best national practices, and review the UAE's experience in coordinating judicial authorities and facilitating legal assistance requests.
The minister also met with the UAE's Justice Minister to discuss enhancing cooperation frameworks and exchanging expertise in judicial and legal fields. He also met with Egyptian judges and members of the judicial bodies assigned to work in the UAE, expressing his pride in their high-level judicial model and their contribution to supporting and developing the judicial system in the UAE.
The UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice aims to promote international cooperation in preventing and combating crime, and to discuss the latest developments and challenges in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. Egypt's participation in the congress reflects its commitment to international cooperation in this field and its efforts to develop its national judicial system.
