Starting Sunday, November 1, 2026, Egyptian internet service providers have increased the capacity of their basic home internet packages from 50 GB to 100 GB without changing subscription fees. This change was made in accordance with a recommendation issued by the Egypt Forum, according to Mohamed Ibrahim, Deputy Executive Director of the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA). The new package is now available from all fixed internet service providers.
The basic package was initially launched in May 2026, with a price of 150 EGP and a capacity of 50 GB, targeting users with limited consumption. The package aimed to provide access to government services and digital transformation services. Ibrahim stated that interactions and discussions at the Egypt Forum led to a recommendation to double the capacity of this package.
The NTRA worked with internet service providers to implement the changes, which came into effect on November 1. Ibrahim emphasized that the modification only applies to the basic package and not to an automatic increase in capacity for all existing packages. Users can now enjoy double the capacity of the basic package without any additional costs.
Regarding 5G network coverage, Ibrahim stated that introducing new generations of communication networks takes time to expand coverage. He cited the example of 4G, which now covers over 95% of Egypt. More than 5000 towers currently support 5G services, with plans to expand coverage based on user numbers and compatible devices.
Ibrahim addressed concerns about the absence of 5G networks for some users, despite having compatible phones and being in covered areas. He attributed this to high usage and network congestion, which can cause 5G signals to disappear and reappear. A plan is in place to re-densify coverage in areas that need more towers and extend services to uncovered areas.
During the interview, media personality Sayed Ali raised complaints about how some mobile and internet companies treat consumers, particularly with home and wireless internet services. He expressed his intention to send examples of these problems to the NTRA. Ibrahim invited citizens to send any complaints or examples of issues they face with telecom companies.
The NTRA reportedly receives around 125,000 complaints per month and follows up on them. Citizens can contact the Citizen Service Center via the 155 hotline. Ibrahim encouraged users to report any issues they encounter with telecom services. The increased capacity aims to improve internet services for Egyptian users.
