The Egyptian industrial sector is bracing for the expiration of a temporary property tax exemption for factories at the end of this year. According to the Egyptian Association of Tax Experts, there are three possible scenarios for the future of property tax on factories. The expiration of the exemption has raised concerns about the impact on the sector, which has been facing significant challenges.

The Egyptian Association of Tax Experts has expressed concerns about the challenges facing the industrial sector, citing rising energy and raw material prices, as well as disruptions to global supply chains. The sector has also been affected by the slowdown in the global economy. The association's founder, Ashraf Abdel Ghani, emphasized that the sector requires support and assistance to overcome these challenges.

One of the possible scenarios is a permanent exemption from property tax for factories, which would help encourage investment, reduce overall production costs, and enhance the competitiveness of Egyptian products in external markets. This scenario would require legislative amendments to the Property Tax Law. Abdel Ghani argued that this would allow investments to be directed towards operational activities and expansions rather than being consumed by tax burdens.

Another scenario is the extension of the temporary exemption until 2030, in the hope that the current tensions in the region will ease and the industrial sector will recover. This scenario would provide temporary relief to factories but would not address the underlying issues. The third scenario involves continuing with the current property tax rules for factories after the temporary exemption expires.

Abdel Ghani emphasized that factory owners do not benefit from the increased value of the land, as factories provide employment opportunities for young people, meet local market needs, reduce imports, and increase exports, ultimately boosting foreign reserves. He stressed that the industrial sector plays a vital role in the country's economy and that its challenges need to be addressed.

The Egyptian government had previously issued a decision to bear the costs of property tax for 20 industrial activities for three years, ending in 2026. However, with the expiration of the temporary exemption, the government must now consider the possible scenarios and their implications for the industrial sector. The sector's future and its ability to contribute to the country's economy depend on the government's decision.

The decision on the future of property tax on factories will have significant implications for the Egyptian economy. The industrial sector is a crucial component of the economy, and its challenges need to be addressed to ensure its continued growth and contribution to the country's development. The government's decision will be closely watched by factory owners, investors, and other stakeholders.
