Egyptian Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister, Dr. Mahmoud Essmat, emphasized the ongoing communication with Russian partners to explore cooperation opportunities in supplying energy storage systems, transferring technology, and localizing the industry in Egypt. The minister highlighted the mutual interest in developing battery technologies for the electricity sector and renewable energy projects. This meeting signifies a crucial step towards strengthening Egypt-Russia relations in the energy sector.
During his visit to the RENERA factory, a subsidiary of Russia's Rosatom, Dr. Essmat met with Anastasia Mikhaylova, the General Director, to discuss lithium-ion cell and energy storage battery production. The minister was briefed on the integrated factory producing lithium-ion cells, energy storage units, and systems. He toured the high-tech production lines, which boast an automation level of 95%, and visited several departments within the factory.
The RENERA factory has an annual production capacity of 18 million battery cells, equivalent to 50,000 batteries. The production is primarily directed towards electric vehicles, including cars, buses, trams, and river ships, as well as individual transportation means. Additionally, the factory produces batteries for backup power systems in industrial facilities, data centers, and hospitals. This production aligns with Egypt's goals to expand its renewable energy sector.
Dr. Essmat stressed the importance of localizing the industry and transferring technology through partnerships with the private sector to maximize resources and support Egypt's sustainable development plan. He highlighted the ministry's program to support such models and partnerships, aiming to transform Egypt into a regional hub for renewable energy component manufacturing.
The minister emphasized that relying on solar and wind energy, as outlined in the national energy strategy, requires the expansion of energy storage batteries to ensure grid security and sustained power supply. This move is crucial for maintaining a stable energy supply and supporting the country's renewable energy targets.
The strategic partnership between Egypt and Russia encompasses cooperation in various fields, including technology transfer, capacity building, and industry localization. This collaboration aims to achieve mutual benefits, create added value for the economy, and support Egypt's goals in deepening local manufacturing and enhancing technological and industrial capabilities.
The discussions between Dr. Essmat and Rosatom representatives reflect Egypt's efforts to diversify its energy sources and enhance its renewable energy sector. By localizing energy storage battery production, Egypt aims to reduce its reliance on imports and develop a more sustainable energy infrastructure.
