Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta has addressed a question regarding whether a traveler can lead residents in Friday prayer. According to the inquirer, a renowned scholar visited a town on a Friday and was asked to deliver the sermon and lead the congregation in prayer. Dar Al-Ifta stated that if the scholar was chosen by the people and led them in prayer, it would be permissible and their prayers would be valid according to the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools of thought.

However, the Maliki school of thought stipulates that the Imam of Friday prayer must be a resident of the area. Dar Al-Ifta emphasized that, based on this, if the scholar was chosen by the people and led them in prayer, his actions would be valid according to some Islamic schools of thought. The scholar's prayer with the congregation would be considered correct, provided that the people chose him for the task.

Sheikh Muhammad Wasim, a member of Dar Al-Ifta, discussed the importance of attending Friday prayers, citing a hadith that states, "Whoever abandons three consecutive Friday prayers out of negligence, God will seal his heart." This highlights the significance of regular attendance at Friday prayers. Sheikh Wasim also referenced another hadith where the Prophet Muhammad warned that those who abandon Friday prayers would be considered among the heedless.

Regarding the consequences of missing Friday prayers, Sheikh Wasim mentioned that Imam Malik stated that a person who misses three consecutive Friday prayers without a valid reason would have their testimony rejected. This underlines the gravity of neglecting Friday prayers. However, Sheikh Wasim clarified that missing Friday prayers does not lead to apostasy, but rather indicates that the individual has begun to commit serious sins.

Dar Al-Ifta emphasized that Friday prayer is an obligatory duty for every Muslim who is of sound mind, is of age, and is capable of performing it. The Quran states, "O you who have believed, when the call to prayer is made on the day of Friday, hasten to the remembrance of God and leave buying and selling." The Prophet Muhammad also said, "The Friday prayer is an obligation upon every Muslim in congregation, except for four: a slave, a woman, a child, or a sick person."

Dar Al-Ifta noted that if a Muslim is unable to attend Friday prayer due to a valid reason such as illness or travel, they should perform the Dhuhr prayer instead. The Prophet Muhammad stressed the importance of attending Friday prayers, stating that it is an obligation that should not be taken lightly. Those who abandon it without a valid reason risk incurring God's wrath.

Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Baz, a prominent Islamic scholar, warned that neglecting Friday prayers without a valid reason is a grave mistake. He cited a hadith stating that those who abandon Friday prayers would have their hearts sealed by God, leading them to become heedless. Therefore, it is essential for Muslims to prioritize attending Friday prayers and to be mindful of the consequences of neglecting this obligation.
