The Egyptian Ministry of Transportation has confirmed that work is underway on the first phase of the Alexandria Metro project, a significant urban transportation development in Alexandria. The project, which spans 108 kilometers, will be implemented in three phases. The first phase, currently under construction, stretches 22 kilometers from Abu Qir to Misr station in Alexandria. This phase includes a surface route from Misr station to just before Zahraa station, covering 6.5 kilometers, and an elevated route to Abu Qir, spanning 15.5 kilometers.

The Ministry of Transportation has revealed that the first phase of the Alexandria Metro project comprises 20 stations and 21 trains, with a total of 189 cars manufactured by the Egyptian National Railway Industries Company (Nerick). The project aims to increase the maximum capacity to 60,000 passengers per hour per direction, significantly up from 2,850 passengers per hour per direction. The new metro system is expected to reduce travel time from 50 minutes to 25 minutes, with an operating speed of 100 km/h, and decrease the interval between trains from 10 minutes to 2.5 minutes.

The second phase of the project, currently under study, will extend 31 kilometers from Zahraa to Kilo 21 in El Agami, with 21 stations planned. There is also potential for a future 5-kilometer link to connect with the first line of the high-speed train at Alexandria station. The third phase, also under study, will cover 48 kilometers from Kilo 21 to Borg El Arab Airport, with 21 stations planned. This phase will enable direct connectivity between Alexandria and Borg El Arab Airport.

The Alexandria Metro project is designed to integrate with various public transportation systems in Alexandria, including the Cairo-Alexandria railway at Misr and Sidi Gaber stations, the tramway at Sidi Gaber and Victoria stations, and the Rashid railway at El Maamoura station. The project will also link with the first line of the high-speed train network at Borg El Arab station in the future.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, the Alexandria Metro project is expected to reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions and noise levels, and promote environmental sustainability and public health. The project will also help alleviate traffic congestion in Alexandria, improving the overall quality of life for residents.

The Egyptian National Railway Industries Company (Nerick) is manufacturing the trains for the Alexandria Metro project, which will be operated by the Egyptian National Railway. The project is part of a broader effort to develop urban transportation in Egypt and improve the efficiency of transportation networks.

The Alexandria Metro project is a key component of Egypt's plan to enhance its transportation infrastructure, with a focus on reducing congestion, improving air quality, and increasing the efficiency of public transportation systems. The project is expected to have a significant impact on the city's transportation network and the daily lives of its residents.
