The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecasts an improvement in Egypt's agricultural production indicators for the 2026/2027 season, compared to previous seasons. This improvement is attributed to efforts to expand wheat cultivation horizontally and increase productivity through the use of modern agricultural techniques, early and high-yielding varieties, and the distribution of certified seeds.

The Egyptian government's purchases of local wheat in 2026 exceeded the target of 5 million tons, recording a 30% increase compared to the previous season's 4 million tons. The high government purchase prices have encouraged farmers to expand wheat cultivation and increase their supplies, supporting local production and strengthening strategic reserves.

The growth in local production has impacted Egypt's import needs, with the USDA predicting a decline in wheat imports to around 12 million tons in the 2026/2027 season, a decrease of approximately 23% from the previous season. This is due to the increase in local production and the availability of quantities carried over from stocks.

Efforts to develop production have also extended to corn, with the USDA expecting an increase in Egypt's corn production, supported by the use of new high-yielding varieties, improved pest control, and enhanced agricultural advisory services. The commitment to optimal planting dates and the expansion of demonstration fields to display new varieties and improve marketing channels have also contributed to this growth.

The strong demand for livestock and poultry feed has encouraged farmers to adopt recommended agricultural practices and improve production efficiency. In the poultry sector, new investments and the expansion of production projects, as well as licenses granted to poultry and feed projects, have enhanced local production and sector efficiency.

In 2025/2026, Egypt's poultry production reached approximately 1.6 billion chickens, in addition to 320 million chickens from rural production, providing about 97% of domestic demand. The production of table eggs also increased to 16 billion eggs, compared to around 14 billion eggs before 2023, reflecting the sector's expanded production capacity and improved ability to meet local market needs.

Egypt has also consolidated its position in the aquaculture sector, leading Africa with an annual production of around 1.6 million tons of fish, with private farms contributing about 80% of total production. This reflects the expansion of the animal and fish production base and the diversification of food supply sources, in parallel with the growth of investments and agricultural projects.
