Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly addressed the Leaders’ Meeting on Partnership for Multilateral Action, Security and Peace at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. He called for redirecting the international financial system's resources toward greater fairness and better addressing the needs of the Global South. Madbouly emphasized that poverty, inequality, and obstacles to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals threaten international stability and economic prosperity.
Madbouly is leading Egypt’s UNGA delegation on behalf of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi. The delegation includes Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty. The meeting was attended by several heads of state, government leaders, and senior officials, including Kenyan President William Ruto and European Council President António Costa. Madbouly stated that countries share goals of promoting peace and stability, supporting sustainable development, and upholding multilateralism and the principles of the UN Charter.
However, Madbouly noted that achieving these objectives has become increasingly difficult amid wars and global divisions. He stressed that joint efforts must focus on preventing and resolving conflicts. The prime minister argued that some parties have long responded to potential conflicts through unilateral measures while overlooking the benefits of diplomacy. He warned that the root causes of conflicts, including poverty, inequality, and weak development, remain largely unaddressed.
Madbouly emphasized that the capabilities of the international financial system must be redirected to achieve greater fairness and better reflect the interests and needs of the Global South. His remarks came as Egyptian officials intensified Arab diplomatic coordination on the sidelines of the UN meetings, particularly over Palestine and mounting regional crises. Egypt is pushing for de-escalation and a Gaza settlement in UNGA meetings.
Madbouly also stressed that the multilateral international system must remain at the heart of efforts to promote peace, security, and development. He noted that the United Nations is uniquely positioned to support shared international objectives if it receives the resources needed to fulfil its mandate. The prime minister called on countries to seize every opportunity to restore momentum to multilateralism by providing adequate resources and demonstrating political will.
The UN meetings are unfolding amid discussions over the organization’s future leadership, with Egypt holding talks on the UN leadership transition. Egyptian diplomacy has also focused on regional de-escalation efforts during bilateral meetings held alongside the General Assembly. Madbouly reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation, stating that Egypt stands ready to work with all partners to ensure that multilateralism becomes an effective instrument for achieving peace, prosperity, and dignity for all.
