The Egyptian government has launched the second phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) tram system in Cairo. The new phase stretches from Ain Sokhna Road to Sun Capital station, according to a statement by the Ministry of Transport. This development is part of the state's strategy to enhance sustainable transportation and boost local production in the sector. The second phase is expected to accelerate the implementation of this strategy.
The Sun Capital station, located at the intersection of the ring road and Fayoum Road, is one of the most significant stops on the route. Covering an area of approximately 80,000 square meters, it serves as a major transportation hub. The launch of the second phase brings the total number of stations on the route to 16, spanning a distance of 75 kilometers. These stations include Maréchal Tantawi, Al-Golf, Route d'Aïn Sokhna, Maadi, Mokattam, Algazair, Al-Imamayn, Al-Zahraa, El-Bahr El-Aazam, Omraniya, Talbiya, Mariouteya, and Sun Capital.
The second phase of the BRT project began experimental operations without passengers on September 19, at the start of the academic year. The first phase, which was inaugurated on June 1, 2025, connects the Police Academy station to the Route Agricole d'Alexandrie station, covering 35 kilometers and 14 stations. The entire BRT system aims to provide a modern, environmentally friendly mode of public transportation.
The fare for the BRT system is determined by the number of stations traveled. The prices range from 5 Egyptian pounds for up to 4 stations to 35 pounds for up to 30 stations. The BRT is integrated with other public transportation systems in Cairo, including the metro, light rail train (LRT), and the east Nile monorail. This integration allows for seamless travel across the city.
The BRT project features modern electric buses operating on a dedicated lane, separate from other traffic on the ring road. This setup ensures the regularity of the service and provides a reliable mode of transportation for passengers. According to the Ministry of Transport, the project aligns with the state's goals for sustainable development and environmental protection.
Key connections have been made between the BRT and other transportation systems. The BRT links with the first line of the metro at Al-Zahraa and El Marg stations, and with the third line at Adly Mansour and Imbaba stations. It also connects with the LRT at Adly Mansour station and the east Nile monorail at Maréchal Tantawi station.
