The Egyptian government has implemented a new fee structure for vehicle license plates, increasing the cost by 35 EGP, or 16.3%, to 250 EGP. This change, effective October 1, 2026, was announced through a decision by the Interior Ministry, as published in the official gazette on September 30, 2026. The updated fee applies to all types of rapid transportation vehicles.

According to the Interior Ministry's decision, the new fee replaces the previous charge of 215 EGP, as stated in the executive regulations of the Traffic Law, issued by Ministerial Decree No. 1613 of 2008. The amendment involves replacing the phrase "two hundred and fifteen pounds" with "two hundred and fifty pounds" in the relevant paragraph of Article 347 of the Traffic Law's executive regulations.

The increased fee covers the costs of developing the shape of license plates, updating their data, and securing and installing them permanently. This requirement is mandated by Article 347 of the Traffic Law's executive regulations. Additionally, the regulations specify that Egyptian license plates used in international traffic cost 600 EGP.

The new regulations also emphasize that license plates must be installed on vehicles by authorized personnel from the traffic department, and they cannot be transferred from their designated location. These measures aim to enhance the security and authenticity of vehicle registration in Egypt.

The decision to raise the fees for license plates comes as part of the government's efforts to improve and modernize the country's traffic and transportation systems. By updating the fees, the Interior Ministry aims to ensure the efficient management of vehicle registrations and enhance road safety.

The implementation of the new fees started on October 1, 2026, following the publication of the official gazette on September 30, 2026. Vehicle owners and operators are required to comply with the updated regulations when registering or renewing their vehicles' license plates.

The increase in fees for vehicle license plates is one of several measures being taken by the Egyptian government to optimize its traffic management systems and improve public services. Further updates and changes to the traffic regulations may be expected in the future.
