The Egyptian government has approved a 30% discount on consumption for code meters installed before 2024, for a period of 6 months. This move aims to provide a grace period for users to regularize their status and complete reconciliation procedures for construction violations. The discount applies to users who were charged according to the seventh tier, the highest consumption tier.

The government's decision was announced by Mohamed Adel, spokesperson for the Council of Ministers. He explained that the discount is part of the state's efforts to facilitate reconciliation procedures for construction violations. Adel emphasized that the discount is specifically designed for code meters installed before 2024, which were previously charged according to the tiered consumption system.

The new discount brings down the price of one kilowatt-hour from 274 piasters to approximately 192 piasters. This reduction is expected to benefit users who were previously metered according to the seventh tier. However, not all code meter users will automatically benefit from the discount, as it is tied to specific eligibility criteria, including the date of meter installation and the user's consumption history.

According to Adel, users who benefit from the discount are expected to complete reconciliation procedures within the six-month period. Upon successful completion, their accounts will be normalized, and they will no longer be subject to the code meter system. The government has estimated that the total cost of the discount will be around 3 billion Egyptian pounds.

The decision to offer the discount was made in line with recommendations from the "Egypt 2026" forum. The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy will start applying the discount from November 1st. The ministry aims to provide relief to users who were previously metered according to the tiered consumption system.

The code meter system was introduced to monitor and regulate electricity consumption in buildings. However, many users have faced challenges in regularizing their status due to various reasons, including construction violations. The government's decision to offer a discount aims to address these challenges and provide a more flexible approach to reconciliation.

The discount is part of the government's efforts to improve the efficiency of the electricity sector and provide better services to consumers. By offering a 30% discount on code meter consumption, the government aims to encourage users to regularize their status and contribute to the overall development of the sector.
