Millions of Egyptian families are awaiting the implementation of a new annual increase in pensions, set to take effect in January 2027. The increase comes as a response to rising living costs and daily expenses. According to Ihab Mansour, Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives' Labor Committee, the minimum pension will rise to approximately 2080 EGP, up from 1755 EGP, marking an increase of around 320 EGP.
The anticipated increase represents the standard annual adjustment typically approved each year and is scheduled for implementation in January 2027. Mansour explained that this change aims to provide better financial support to retirees. However, he also noted that the increase may not be sufficient to fully address the economic burdens and living expenses faced by Egyptian families.
The proposed increase in the minimum pension to 2080 EGP is seen as a step towards improving the financial situation of retirees. Nevertheless, Mansour emphasized that this amount still falls short of adequately covering the basic needs of retirees, especially given the rising costs of medications, household essentials, and service fees. He stressed the need for a clear plan to enhance retirees' income.
Mansour called for aligning the minimum pension with the minimum wage, suggesting that achieving this goal may require several years but necessitates a defined timeline and gradual steps. He highlighted that retirees need adjustments that match economic changes and living cost increases to ensure a dignified life after years of work.
Approximately 300,000 citizens currently receive the minimum pension, out of a total of 11 million retiree families. Mansour underscored the importance of reassessing the situation of this group and finding solutions to improve their living standards. He emphasized that developing the pension system should prioritize retirees' needs.
The Deputy Chairman of the Labor Committee pointed out that retirees bear increasing living and health expenses, necessitating the exploration of mechanisms to sustainably enhance their income. This includes reviewing the current pension structure and implementing necessary adjustments to reflect economic realities.
The Egyptian government aims to improve the living conditions of its citizens, particularly vulnerable groups such as retirees. The upcoming increase in the minimum pension is part of broader efforts to mitigate the impact of economic challenges on households.
