Mr. Emma Bennett, Headteacher of Gina’s Angel School, emphasized the importance of a strong parent-teacher relationship in identifying children’s challenges early, reinforcing positive behavior, and establishing consistent expectations at home and school. He made these remarks in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA). According to Mr. Bennett, parents can support their children’s education by knowing them beyond the classroom through regular communication with teachers.

Mr. Emman Raymond, Chief Executive Officer of Intellect School Quiz Educational Consult, also highlighted the role of parents in supporting teachers. He stated that parents can ensure their children attend school regularly, complete homework, read at home, and develop positive study habits. By doing so, parents can reinforce positive behaviors and form strong partnerships with teachers to help children gain support both at home and in school.

Effective communication between parents and teachers is crucial in providing useful information about children’s interests, strengths, learning habits, family circumstances, and challenges that might affect their learning. Mr. Raymond encouraged teachers to share positive developments in children’s progress with parents as part of efforts to strengthen their involvement in their children’s education.

Both educationists stressed that parents and teachers should not see themselves as separate entities, but rather as partners with a shared responsibility in helping children learn, develop good character, and reach their potential. By working together, parents and teachers can provide children with the support they need to succeed academically and personally.

The educationists’ call for stronger parent-teacher collaboration comes at a time when Ghana’s education sector is facing various challenges, including teacher shortages and inadequate infrastructure. For instance, the Nfantefom D/A basic school has been reported to be facing teacher shortages and a lack of furniture, which can negatively impact students’ learning outcomes.

Ghana has made significant progress in education, with the country ranking 14th globally among international students in U.S. universities. However, to sustain this progress, it is essential to address the challenges facing the education sector and promote collaboration between parents and teachers to support children’s academic development and overall wellbeing.
