The Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Ltd has taken a proactive approach to addressing the deplorable state of the Benin-Sapele-Warri highway, a major transportation artery in Delta State, Nigeria. As part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR), the refinery has carried out palliative repairs on various sections of the road. This move is aimed at preventing further breakdowns and losses of goods for trucks and heavy-duty vehicles using the highway.
The palliative work was done at several sections of the road, including Iyanomo, Ekosa, Obayantor, Ologbo, and Koko junction. According to the Head of Technical Operations of the Edo Refinery, Segun Okeni, the intervention was prompted by concerns over the safety of commuters and the potential for accidents. He cited a previous incident five years ago when an oil tanker carrying petrol fell at one of the bad spots in Ologbo, resulting in a fire that killed over 20 persons.
The failed portions of the highway have been affecting the refinery's operations, as tankers spent days on the highway before gaining access to the refinery to load products. Okeni explained that the refinery is located just about two kilometers ahead of the affected area, which is part of its CSR coverage. The chairman of the refinery authorized the palliative repairs after witnessing the level of damage to the road and seeing five trucks fall along the road on the same day.
The Managing Director of SODEOSA Global Resources, the civil engineering firm that executed the palliative repairs, Mr. Solomon Uyiekpen, collaborated with the Edo Refinery to fix the road as a CSR to the communities around the area. Uyiekpen noted that commuters experienced suffering on the road before the intervention, which often resulted in accidents and loss of life.
Members of the communities have expressed gratitude to the Edo Refinery for carrying out the project. Kennedy Nwazekwu, a member of the Obayantor community, said the repair work would stop incessant accidents on the road, which have claimed over 20 lives. Agofure Eriwona, a member of the community, commended Edo Refinery for easing movement of vehicles in the area.
