West Africa has taken a significant step towards enhancing its energy sector with the launch of the Regional Energy Governance and Information System (REGIS-WA). The initiative, aimed at improving energy governance and facilitating clean energy integration, was introduced during a workshop that brought together senior officials from ECOWAS member states and regional bodies. The workshop focused on establishing a strategic roadmap for the project, which is managed by the Directorate of Energy and Mines.

The REGIS-WA project aligns with both regional and global development goals, as well as the revised ECOWAS treaty. ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitalization, Amin Amidu Sulemani, addressed the workshop virtually, emphasizing the importance of strong, transparent, and data-driven energy governance. He noted that ECOWAS's ambitions for the energy sector cannot be achieved without such governance, highlighting the project's timely contribution to updating regional energy policies.

The European Union has reiterated its commitment to enhancing governance and reliable data to support an integrated and climate-friendly regional electricity market. Céline Hoste, leader of the EU Delegation's team for regional cooperation, emphasized the EU's support for the project, which aims to translate regional policies into actionable steps at the national level and bolster the ECOWAS Energy Information System. This system is vital for energy statistics and informed decision-making.

Germany has also affirmed its ongoing support for sustainable energy development in West Africa through the REGIS-WA project. Dr. Karin Jansen, from the German Embassy in Nigeria, acknowledged ECOWAS's role and stated that REGIS-WA would enhance the regional energy information system and strengthen cooperation with the African Union. The project will focus on monitoring regional energy policies and enhancing the energy statistical capacities of member states.

The workshop aims to foster a shared understanding among partners and validate the project's operational roadmap and implementation goals. It will also facilitate stakeholder engagement and coordination, ensuring that the project meets its objectives. The REGIS-WA project is funded by the EU with a budget of €3 million and is implemented by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) as part of its ProCEM II programme.

The REGIS-WA project is a significant step towards achieving ECOWAS's energy sector ambitions. By enhancing the regional energy information system and strengthening cooperation among member states, the project will contribute to the development of a climate-friendly regional electricity market. The project's focus on monitoring regional energy policies and enhancing energy statistical capacities will also support informed decision-making.

The launch of REGIS-WA marks a new era of cooperation and collaboration in the energy sector. With the support of the EU, GIZ, and other regional bodies, ECOWAS is poised to make significant strides in enhancing its energy governance and facilitating clean energy integration. The project's success will depend on the continued engagement and coordination of its stakeholders, who will work together to achieve its objectives.
