The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a planned maintenance exercise that will cause a temporary power outage in several communities in the Accra East Region and Western Region on Friday, October 2. This exercise is part of routine efforts to strengthen the reliability of electricity supply to customers in the region. The outage will affect various areas, including Oyarifa, Ayimensah, and surrounding communities.

According to a public notice issued by ECG on September 30, the power outage will begin at 9:00am and last until 5:00pm, covering an eight-hour window. Residents and businesses in the affected areas have been urged to prepare ahead of the interruption. The notice stated that the maintenance works are aimed at improving service delivery and reducing the frequency of unscheduled faults across the ECG network.

The communities and institutions that will be without power during the outage include parts of Oyarifa, Ayimensah, Prisons Training School, School Junction, and University Farms, along with their surrounding areas. ECG has apologized for any inconvenience the outage may cause and has asked households, businesses, and institutions within the listed locations to take note of the schedule and make adequate preparations.

This planned outage is a routine feature of ECG's maintenance calendar, aimed at upgrading infrastructure and reducing the frequency of unscheduled faults across its network. The exercise is expected to improve the overall reliability of electricity supply to customers in the region. ECG has assured customers that the temporary outage is necessary to ensure a more stable and efficient electricity supply in the long run.

Earlier, the Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, identified a makeshift technical arrangement at the Akosombo power plant as the root cause of the intermittent blackouts hitting homes and businesses across Ghana. The temporary control system was installed at Akosombo after a fire and explosion at the GRIDCo substation there in April made a bypass arrangement the only way to avoid a complete six-month shutdown of the facility.

The planned maintenance exercise by ECG is separate from the ongoing efforts to address the root cause of the intermittent blackouts in Ghana. The government and ECG are working to upgrade infrastructure and improve the reliability of electricity supply across the country. The outage on October 2 is expected to have a minimal impact on the overall electricity supply situation in Ghana.

The Electricity Company of Ghana has assured customers that it is committed to providing a reliable and efficient electricity supply. The company has urged customers to report any faults or issues with their electricity supply to its customer service department. The planned maintenance exercise on October 2 is part of ECG's efforts to improve its services and reduce the frequency of power outages across Ghana.
