The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has scheduled maintenance work affecting parts of Ghana over the next two days, causing temporary power interruptions in various regions. A notice published on October 8 confirmed the planned outages, which are expected to affect different regions. The power cuts will enable engineers to work on faults to improve service delivery.
According to the ECG, the power cuts will generally be from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The operational regions to be affected are the Tema, Ashanti, and Western regions. In the Ashanti Region, affected areas include Nagole, Sreso, Kuffuor, and Nyinahin. The power distributor acknowledged the disruption the outage may cause, expressing regret over any inconvenience to customers in the affected communities.
In Tema, the areas affected by the power cuts will be Dawhenya, Abbeykope, Ablekuma, and Golden Leaves. In the Western Region, New Takoradi, New Market, SSNIR, and Monkey Hill are among the areas that will be affected. The ECG noted that planned outages of this nature are a routine feature of its maintenance calendar, aimed at upgrading infrastructure and reducing the frequency of unscheduled faults across its network.
The Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, earlier identified a makeshift technical arrangement at the Akosombo power plant as the root cause of the intermittent blackouts hitting homes and businesses across Ghana. He explained that the temporary control system was installed at Akosombo after a fire and explosion at the GRIDCo substation there in April made a bypass arrangement the only way to avoid a complete six-month shutdown of the facility.
The ECG had previously scheduled a planned maintenance exercise affecting several parts of the country during the week starting October 5. The power distributor had issued a notice over the weekend confirming that the outages would run from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. This recent announcement is part of the company's efforts to improve its services and reduce the frequency of power outages.
The ECG's maintenance work is expected to improve service delivery and reduce the frequency of unscheduled faults across its network. The power distributor has apologized for any inconvenience caused by the outages and is working to minimize the impact on its customers. The affected communities are advised to plan accordingly and take necessary precautions during the power outages.
The planned maintenance work by the ECG is a routine exercise aimed at upgrading infrastructure and ensuring reliable power supply to customers. The power distributor has urged customers to be patient and understanding during this period, assuring them that the work will ultimately lead to improved service delivery and reduced power outages in the long run.
