The Ebonyi State Government has initiated a month-long free prostate screening, surgery, and treatment programme for its residents. The programme, which began on October 5, 2026, at Ezzamgbo General Hospital in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, aims to provide free medical services to over 1,000 men. The programme was launched under the leadership of Governor Francis Nwifuru, demonstrating the government's commitment to improving healthcare services for its citizens.

On the first day of the programme, over 200 people participated in the screening exercise. According to Dr. Ifeanyi Edeaja, Medical Officer of Ezzamgbo General Hospital, the programme offers free preliminary tests and telescopic prostate surgeries. These medical services usually cost between N50,000 and N70,000 for preliminary tests and about N2 million for surgeries. The government has provided funding for the screening, surgery for about 50 patients, and treatment for 1,000 others.

The programme has already recorded significant success, with the hospital performing eight prostate surgeries without complications. Additionally, the intervention has led to a substantial increase in the hospital's monthly outpatient attendance, rising from fewer than 60 patients to more than 500. Dr. Edeaja encouraged residents suffering from prostate-related conditions to take advantage of the programme, emphasizing the government's commitment to providing accessible healthcare services.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Prof. Jesse Uneke, Vice Chancellor of David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu (DUFUHS). Prof. Uneke urged men to prioritize regular medical check-ups, highlighting the importance of early detection in preventing complications and reducing the risk of death. He emphasized that early detection of prostate-related conditions can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

Sct. Eze Paul Ituma, Chairman of Ohaukwu Local Government Area, expressed his support for the programme, describing it as a significant healthcare initiative aimed at bringing medical services closer to residents at the grassroots. He encouraged men aged 40 and above to participate in the free screening and take advantage of the treatment and surgical services offered. Ituma also assured the medical team and hospital management of the council's cooperation in addressing challenges faced by the hospital.

The programme is scheduled to run until November 5, 2026, providing a month-long opportunity for residents to access free medical services. The Ebonyi State Government's initiative has been praised for its focus on preventive healthcare and its efforts to make medical services more accessible to its citizens. By providing free prostate screening, surgery, and treatment, the government aims to improve healthcare outcomes for its residents.

The success of the programme will be closely monitored, and its impact on the healthcare sector in Ebonyi State will be evaluated. The government's commitment to improving healthcare services is evident in this initiative, and residents are encouraged to take advantage of the programme to improve their health and well-being. The programme's outcome will likely influence future healthcare initiatives in the state.
