A recent flood disaster in Akaeze community, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi, has left several houses destroyed, families displaced, and property worth billions of naira lost. The member representing Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Nkemkama Kama, visited the affected community to assess the damage. He described the situation as devastating.
Kama toured five villages in the affected community, witnessing firsthand the extent of the destruction caused by the flood. Several families have been displaced, and their homes and properties destroyed. The lawmaker expressed his sadness at the situation, saying it was terrible and that he had not seen such devastation before.
As an immediate relief measure, Kama donated 500 cartons of noodles and N8 million in cash to the victims. He explained that he personally contributed N4 million, while the Commissioner for Infrastructure in the state, Engr. Obasi Abara, donated another N4 million. The donation aims to provide temporary assistance to the affected families pending further interventions from the state and Federal Governments.
Kama disclosed that officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) had visited the affected communities. He had also communicated with the Director-General of NEMA over the disaster and expressed optimism that further assistance would come from both the state and Federal Governments.
The flood victims shared their experiences, describing the disaster as unprecedented. Okoro Emmanuel, a victim, said several buildings collapsed, while farms were submerged. He appealed to the government and well-meaning individuals to come to the aid of the affected communities. Another victim, Nwali Ogochukwu, lost all his buildings to the flood.
According to the victims, no lives were lost in the disaster, but the flood had displaced residents and destroyed homes, farms, and other valuable property, leaving many families stranded and in urgent need of assistance. The community is now relying on the government's intervention and assistance from well-meaning individuals to recover from the disaster.
Kama assured the victims that there would be many interventions coming from the state and federal levels. The government and other stakeholders are expected to provide further assistance to the affected communities to help them recover from the devastating flood disaster.
