A provincial deputy from Tshopo province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has criticized the response to the Ebola outbreak in Bafwasende, a territory in the north-east of the country. Trufene Mabikianiambey, the provincial deputy for that constituency, expressed his concerns during a plenary session of the Provincial Assembly on Tuesday. He highlighted several shortcomings that are hindering the fight against Ebola, including the inadequate management of suspected cases at the Bafwasende General Reference Hospital.

According to Mabikianiambey, the response to the Ebola outbreak is being hampered by a number of shortcomings, which led to the withdrawal of humanitarian workers following a tragedy on October 24th. A nurse died and another sustained serious injuries, exacerbating the situation. The provincial deputy also cited delays in the transport of samples to Kisangani, which is affecting the timely confirmation of cases. These delays are critical, as they can hinder the effective management of the outbreak.

The situation in Bafwasende is dire, with 19 confirmed cases reported as of October 22nd, including 9 deaths, 5 recoveries, and 2 patients in hospital. Two other patients also left the Ebola Treatment Centre (ETC) without authorization from the health authorities. The violence on October 24th, which claimed the life of a nurse, led to the temporary suspension of healthcare activities in the region. Healthcare providers were wrongly accused by community members of contaminating a river with the virus.

Mabikianiambey has urged the community to take ownership of the response to the Ebola outbreak. He emphasized that without community involvement, the fight against Ebola will be doomed to failure. The provincial deputy also called for the establishment of a suitable local laboratory to speed up testing, which would avoid delays in transporting samples to Kisangani and accelerate the confirmation of cases. This would enable health authorities to respond more effectively to the outbreak.

The Ebola outbreak in Bafwasende has highlighted the need for a more effective response to public health emergencies in the region. The situation is being closely monitored by health authorities, who are working to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of the virus. The provincial government has been urged to take immediate action to address the shortcomings in the response and ensure that the community is fully engaged in the fight against Ebola.

The crisis in Bafwasende has also underscored the importance of community engagement in public health responses. Health authorities need to work closely with local communities to build trust and ensure that they are fully informed about the risks and benefits of Ebola response measures. By working together, it is possible to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of the virus.
