The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) has initiated a six-day evaluation of Rwanda's capabilities to contribute to peacekeeping efforts in the region. Led by Brig Gen Ronald Rwivanga, the EASF team arrived in Rwanda on November 2, 2026, to assess the country's military, police, and civilian capacities. This evaluation aims to determine whether Rwanda's contributions meet the required standards for deployment in peacekeeping missions.
The assessment began at the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) headquarters, where the EASF team was received by Maj Gen Dr Ephrem Rurangwa, representing the RDF Chief of Staff. Maj Gen Dr Rurangwa emphasized the significance of this evaluation, highlighting that it will ensure Rwanda's commitments translate into tangible capabilities that can be deployed in peacekeeping operations. He stressed the importance of having well-trained personnel, adequate equipment, and a robust logistical framework.
Brig Gen Ronald Rwivanga explained that this evaluation is part of EASF's routine assessments to verify the readiness of member states to contribute to peacekeeping efforts. The evaluation encompasses not only military personnel and equipment but also police and civilian capacities that support peacekeeping operations, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Rwivanga expressed confidence in Rwanda's preparedness, stating that he has no doubt about the country's ability to fulfill its commitments.
During the six-day evaluation, the EASF team will assess Rwanda's military, police, and civilian capabilities, including its medical unit, motorized battalion, military police company, and special forces squadron. The team will also evaluate Rwanda's air assets, including a Mi-17 helicopter and a Caravan aircraft, which can be used for medical evacuations and transportation of personnel.
The evaluation will also cover Rwanda's Light Infantry Battalion and police unit, which are expected to be deployed in support of EASF operations. This comprehensive assessment aims to verify whether Rwanda's contributions meet the required standards for deployment in peacekeeping missions. EASF's objective is to establish a rapid response mechanism to support peace and security operations in the region.
The EASF team will engage with various Rwandan stakeholders, including the RDF, the Rwanda National Police, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to ensure that all aspects of Rwanda's contributions are evaluated. This assessment will enable EASF to determine Rwanda's readiness to participate in peacekeeping operations and identify areas that may require additional support or training.
The evaluation of Rwanda's peacekeeping capabilities is a critical step in ensuring that EASF's member states are prepared to respond to regional security challenges. By assessing Rwanda's military, police, and civilian capacities, EASF can ensure that the country's contributions are effective and reliable. This, in turn, will enhance the overall capacity of EASF to promote peace and stability in the region.
