Dutch Ambassador to Tanzania Marjo Crompvoets has emphasized the need for United Nations member states to maintain their focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the 2030 deadline for achieving the global development agenda approaches. During the raising of the SDG flag at the European Union (EU) headquarters in Dar es Salaam on September 24, 2026, Ms Crompvoets highlighted the importance of the SDGs in achieving the targets set under the 2030 Agenda. The 2030 Agenda aims to build a world of prosperity, peace, and security for all while ensuring that no one is left behind.
Ms Crompvoets acknowledged that achieving all the SDGs by 2030 would be challenging but stressed the importance of keeping the goals on the global development agenda. She identified quality education as one of the areas that requires particular attention, while also highlighting climate change as another priority that needs greater attention. According to Ms Crompvoets, some countries continue to focus on reducing poverty and hunger, while Tanzania is implementing its Development Vision 2050.
Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050 began implementation on July 1, 2026, with 12 priority areas, including agriculture, industry, energy, tourism, sports, intellectual property, land, and urban development. The Netherlands is supporting Tanzania in areas linked to the SDGs, including industrial development, innovation, and infrastructure. This support is part of the Netherlands' efforts to help countries achieve the SDGs.
The SDG flag-raising initiative, launched by the Netherlands in 2020, serves as an annual reminder of the importance of the global goals. According to Ms Crompvoets, the activity is held every year to provide an opportunity for countries and communities to reflect on the progress made in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and to continue promoting their implementation. This initiative aims to keep the SDGs on the global agenda.
Dutch Embassy senior officer Chikulupi Kasaka stated that the event brought together various development stakeholders from Tanzania and beyond. The Embassy of the Netherlands has been at the forefront of commemorating and celebrating this day together with development partners every September. The aim is to remind countries of the commitments and goals they have set regarding the SDGs.
The annual commemoration serves as a reminder that the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda is drawing closer, and there is limited time remaining to achieve its targets. Mr Kasaka added that the event provided an opportunity for countries to assess the progress they had made, identify which goals had been achieved, and determine those that still required greater effort. This reflection is crucial in ensuring that countries stay on track to achieve the SDGs.
