In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a new art piece has been unveiled, celebrating the journey of renowned artist Chéri Samba. "The Triumphant," created by Congolese painter Jean-Paul Nsimba Mika, also known as JP Mika, is an allegory of Chéri Samba's perseverance and success. The artwork was presented during a visit to JP Mika's studio in Kinshasa on October 7, 2026. According to JP Mika, the painting aims to pay tribute to Chéri Samba, an artist who represents a true force of overcoming challenges.
JP Mika emphasized that Chéri Samba built his career in a context marked by the need to assert himself and impose his own vision. The painter highlighted that "The Triumphant" evokes the journey, memory, and victory over oneself, showcasing the years of work, sacrifice, perseverance, and sometimes solitude that lead to international recognition. The artwork depicts two periods of Chéri Samba's life, with the young artist represented in black and white on the left and the mature artist in color on the right.
The transition from black and white to color in the painting is deliberate, symbolizing the passage from an existence still taking shape to one that has been fully revealed. French art curator André Magnin is represented as a link between the two periods, marking a decisive encounter that helped open a new dimension in Chéri Samba's career. JP Mika noted that the term "Triumphant" refers to someone who has gone through hardships without allowing them to define their limits.
For JP Mika, triumph does not solely refer to fame or public recognition but to an inner victory. He stressed that Chéri Samba had to carve his own path through challenges, and his journey shows that a man can rise from the valley and reach the mountain through hard work, discipline, creativity, and perseverance. The artist also highlighted his choice of hyperrealism, which enables him to give the scene an almost photographic dimension while preserving the freedom of painting.
The painting, measuring 155 by 112 cm, gives considerable importance to details, a dimension JP Mika regards as fundamental to his artistic approach. He likes the viewer to be able to discover something new even after looking at the work several times. Through "The Triumphant," JP Mika conveyed a message of perseverance, self-confidence, and self-improvement, inviting the public to consider the journey traveled before appreciating the achievement.
JP Mika mentioned Chéri Samba's meeting with André Magnin and his participation in the "Magiciens de la Terre" exhibition in Paris in 1989 as important moments in his career. He considers these stages of recognition to have been preceded by considerable work. Eleven years after its creation, JP Mika regards "The Triumphant" as an important work in his artistic career, bringing together several concerns that have accompanied him, including memory, transmission, recognition, and the artist's place in society.
For JP Mika, "The Triumphant" remains a painting of victory, but above all, of the conquest of oneself, one's language, one's artistic space, and ultimately, the world. The artwork was created to portray a man who encounters his own fulfillment and, through his journey, becomes a reference for those who come after him. The Congolese press agency had the opportunity to visit JP Mika's studio and learn more about the inspiration behind this remarkable piece.
