The Democratic Republic of Congo's government has dispatched a delegation to Mbuji-Mayi, a city in the Kasai Oriental province, to investigate the recent surge in maize prices. According to a statement released by the national economy ministry, the team was sent to examine the causes of the price hike and propose measures to stabilize the market. The delegation was received by the provincial governor, Jean-Paul Mbwebwa.
During the meeting, the provincial authorities presented an overview of the situation and initiatives undertaken by the provincial government to address speculative practices in the market. The delegation's leader, Emmanuel M'Firi, a counselor for economic control and market surveillance, stated that the price increase can be attributed to difficulties in transporting goods and, more significantly, speculative practices within the marketing chain.
M'Firi further explained that the available stocks of maize at the National Service remain sufficient, and the selling price has not changed in recent years. These factors do not justify the current price level in Mbuji-Mayi, necessitating swift and coordinated action from the authorities. The government, through the national economy ministry and the Economic Regulation Fund (Forec), aims to support provincial efforts to establish mechanisms to curb speculation and stabilize the market.
The national economy ministry's delegation also examined the electrification project for several industrial units in Mbuji-Mayi, including the Nkuadi agricultural base. The completion of the Lubilanji-Nkuadi electricity transmission line is a crucial step towards operationalizing the base and revitalizing related productive activities. The government, through Forec, is supporting the rehabilitation of this energy infrastructure.
Daniel Mukoko, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting provincial authorities in finding rapid and concrete solutions to the economic concerns of the Kasai Oriental population. The primary focus remains on stabilizing the maize market, combating speculative practices, and improving access to this essential commodity.
The current situation in Mbuji-Mayi highlights the challenges faced by the DR Congo government in maintaining economic stability, particularly in rural areas. The authorities' efforts to address the maize price surge and support local industries demonstrate their commitment to improving the livelihoods of citizens. Further actions and measures are expected to be announced in the coming days.
The DR Congo government's response to the maize price crisis in Mbuji-Mayi is part of a broader effort to promote economic growth and stability in the region. The situation will continue to be monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
