Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been elected as the new leader of Ghana's New Patriotic Party (NPP). This development comes after the party's delegates approved a constitutional amendment on October 3, 2026, at the NPP's National Delegates Conference in Kumasi. The amendment makes the party's flagbearer its leader, a change that will have significant implications for the party's structure and operations ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The constitutional amendment is one of 14 changes presented to delegates by the party's Constitution Amendment Committee. These amendments were approved through a voice vote, with delegates responding in favor of the motions. The changes also include provisions for the election of Vice Chairpersons, the creation of Deputy Communications Officer positions, and the elevation of the Information Technology Officer to an executive position.
A total of 7,163 delegates from all 16 regions participated in the conference, with voting conducted at 31 polling stations for nine national executive positions. The Electoral Commission supervised the elections and verified delegates. The approved amendments aim to address gaps identified in the party's previous constitutional review and to enhance the party's organization and functionality.
As the newly elected leader, Dr. Bawumia has called for unity and peaceful voting within the party. He urged the 47 aspirants contesting nine national positions to accept the outcome of the elections and continue working together for the party's success. Dr. Bawumia also congratulated all the aspirants for putting themselves forward to serve the party.
Dr. Bawumia reflected on the party's reorganization since the December 2024 general elections, stating that the party had listened to its grassroots members and learned lessons about its organization, communication, and engagement with supporters. He noted that the party had elected its structures from the polling station to the regional level and had begun preparations towards its next program for government.
Dr. Bawumia also used his address to criticize the current government over several issues, including the proposed 24-hour economy, women's development bank, electricity tariffs, and the cost of transportation. He defended the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, introduced under the previous NPP administration, and accused the government of failing to deliver on several campaign promises.
The NPP's new leadership structure and national executive team will now oversee the party's reorganization and preparations towards the 2028 general elections. Dr. Bawumia's election as leader and presidential candidate positions the party for a strong campaign. The party aims to build a strong organization, focus on holding the government to account, and communicate its policies effectively to Ghanaians.
