Dr. Ahmed Abdel Monem has assumed his role as Vice President for Research at Nile University, starting September 1, 2026. This appointment aligns with the university's strategy to enhance its research capabilities, support the quality and outcomes of research, and develop its research pathways in accordance with its plans and academic objectives. The decision was made by the Board of Trustees of Nile University under the chairmanship of Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin.
In his new role, Dr. Abdel Monem will lead the university's efforts to develop its research and innovation ecosystem, strengthen strategic partnerships, and secure competitive research funding. He will also focus on expanding collaboration with industry, promoting technology transfer, and commercializing research outcomes. Dr. Abdel Monem has an extensive background in materials science, innovation, and academic development, with over 35 years of experience.
Dr. Abdel Monem's academic and research experience includes obtaining his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemistry from Cairo University's Faculty of Science and his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Tohoku University in Japan. He has also worked as a visiting researcher at several international institutes and universities in Japan, Germany, and the United States.
His research interests lie in advanced materials, graphene, and two-dimensional materials, heterogeneous catalysts, printed electronics, and their applications in IoT and flexible sensors. Dr. Abdel Monem has also focused on clean energy technologies and sustainable manufacturing, with an emphasis on linking scientific research to industrial and technological applications.
During his tenure at the Egyptian-Japanese University for Science and Technology, Dr. Abdel Monem served as the founding dean of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences. He played a crucial role in establishing and developing academic and research programs, including the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Center of Excellence for Graphene.
Dr. Abdel Monem has published over 200 peer-reviewed research papers, obtained four international patents, and applied for 11 patent applications. He has also secured competitive research funding exceeding 100 million Egyptian pounds and supervised over 67 master's and Ph.D. theses. His contributions to scientific research and innovation have earned him several national and international awards.
Dr. Abdel Monem's achievements have been recognized globally, including being listed among the top 2% of scientists worldwide by Stanford University from 2020 to 2025. He received the United Nations Development Programme's Innovation for Humanity Award in 2025 and several other national and international accolades.
